You are probably well aware of the drug Diazepam, though you most likely know it by its commercial name Valium. It is one of the most popular drugs in the world and is used to treat a variety of conditions. Diazepam was not the first benzodiazepine to be developed, but is by far the most popular and widely used, though in many cases Xanax is taking its place. Developed in the 1960s, Diazepam can be used to treat insomnia, anxiety, seizures and occasionally it is used for other purposes. Diazepam is not without its drawbacks however. It can be damaging to the liver and kidneys, it is habit forming and dependency forming, it interacts negatively with other drugs and with alcohol. Like most drugs it has side effects as well; Diazepam's side effects include blurred vision, loss of sex drive, hallucination, personality changes and difficulty urinating. Pregnant and nursing mothers should not use Diazepam. For all of these reasons herbal alternatives should be given careful consideration. Natural remedies can be used in place of Diazepam for both anxiety and sleep problems. Herbal supplements are generally safer and side effect free, as well as effective.

If you've been experiencing sleeping problems on a regular basis, chances are that you are willing to do nearly anything to deal with them. There is no need to tell you about all of the negative effects that sleeping problems can have on you, chances are you are already experiencing them. Because the psychological and physical effects are so unpleasant, people often take the quickest, easiest solution available; and this usually comes in the form of a pharmaceutical. Even though symptom relief for sleeping problems can be temporarily provided by pharmaceuticals, they do not address the root of the problem and have negative effects when used in the long term treatment of sleeping problems. Instead you may want to look at making changes in your life to reduce stress, or relieve it. You can also improve your diet, and try using herbal supplements to deal with sleeping problems. Natural remedies can improve sleep patterns without side effects or withdrawal issues; they also do not lend themselves to addiction or abuse, and there is not possibility of overdose associated with herbal supplements designed for the treatment of sleeping problems.

There are sleep disorders like sleep apnea which have definite physical causes, and then there are sleep disorders like onset insomnia which are caused by psychological factors. The second category of sleep disorders is actually more easily treated. With the use of herbal supplements sleep disorders caused by insomnia are effectively treated, though far too many people immediately go for prescription drugs. Sleep disorders do not always require these sorts of drugs, and ideally they should be reserved for only the most difficult and severe cases. Relaxation techniques, change of lifestyle and cognitive therapy can all be very effective in treating anxiety related sleep disorders. The problem with using Ambien to get to sleep is it can be hard to stop, and it can also lead to overdose if not used properly. This is because of the immediate euphoric feeling associated with it can become very addictive. For mild to moderate sleep disorders other methods should first be considered. Sweet dreams.
